Tips To Refer To NCERT Solutions For Class 10 Science Exam

Science remains one of the most feared subjects of CBSE class 10. Even though it is based purely on logic, students seem intimidated by the huge syllabus that accompanies the subject. This is why they tend to score low marks in Science. If students are aware of what topics are important and how to proceed correctly with their studies, their preparation will become much easier. With Board exams coming soon, it is best to formulate a clear plan and set daily tasks with achievable targets. If you hit these targets daily, you will feel a sense of accomplishment that will motivate you further to do better.

There is only 1 NCERT textbook that needs to be followed for class 10 Science as the subject is not divided into Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. This division is done in class 11. However, most of the questions asked in board exams follow a set pattern. Very few questions are asked out of the blue. Almost all the questions are either part of the past year question papers or are given in the exercises present after each chapter in the NCERT. This is why referring to NCERT solutions is of utmost importance for school students.

Class 10 CBSE Science Syllabus

In order to familiarise students with the topics they will encounter in NCERT solutions, we will first give them an overview of the syllabus of class 10 Science. There are 5 units in total consisting of several chapters. These include:

Unit I: Chemical Substances-Nature and Behaviour – This unit is further subdivided into 5 chapters that discuss a series of chemical phenomena.

  • Chemical reactions: The general rules for balancing an equation are taught along with the basics of oxidation and reduction.
  • Acids, bases and salts: The respective definitions of acids, bases, and salts are explained in terms of the furnishing of H+ and OH- ions. The general properties of these compounds are discussed along with their examples and uses.
  • Metals and non-metals: Properties of metals and non-metals are explained with reference to the periodic table. The reactivity series forms an important part of the chapter.
  • Carbon compounds: Carbon’s tetravalency is explained at length which is the cause behind the element’s versatile nature. Homologous series are also introduced.
  • Periodic classification of elements: The history behind the early attempts at classification of elements is taught until we finally arrive at the modern periodic table.

Unit II: World of Living – This is a small unit that focuses solely on biological processes. It consists of 3 chapters.

  • Life processes: The various characteristics of a living being are highlighted alongside the basic concepts of nutrition, respiration, transport, and excretion in plants and animals.
  • Reproduction: Sexual and asexual modes of reproduction are discussed. Diseases like HIV and AIDS are also mentioned.
  • Heredity and Evolution: A brief introduction to evolution is provided after which Mendel’s laws are explained.

Unit III: Natural Phenomena – This unit mainly deals with the optical portion of Physics and covers the topics of refraction and reflection.

  • Reflection of light by curved surfaces: Images formation by spherical mirrors is discussed. Students are also made aware of terms like the centre of curvature, principal axis, principal focus, and focal length.
  • Refraction: Laws of refraction and the refractive index is explained here.
  • Refraction of light by the spherical lens: This is an important chapter from which multiple questions are asked in exams. The lens formula is very useful in solving mathematical problems related to this chapter.
  • Refraction of light through a prism: Here, students are taught about the dispersion and scattering of light with its applications in real life.

Unit IV: Effects of Current

  • Electric current, potential difference and electric current: Details about Ohm’s law are given along with its limitations. Parameters such as resistance and resistivity are talked about. Series and parallel combinations of resistors are discussed with their varied applications in daily life. The interrelation between P, V, I and R are also particularly important.
  • Magnetic effects of current: This is a relatively new chapter that introduces students to the world of electromagnetism. Magnetic field and field lines are introduced. Derivations pertaining to a magnetic field due to a current-carrying conductor and current-carrying coil or solenoid are provided. Fleming’s Left Hand Rule is mentioned. The principle behind an electric motor is explained with the help of electromagnetic induction.

Unit V: Natural Resources – The last unit of the NCERT Class 10 Science textbook is also the easiest to learn. It contains just one chapter that deals with environmental issues.

Our environment: The need to go green is stressed upon, especially given the scenario of the modern world. Environmental problems such as ozone depletion and global warming are highlighted. In addition to this, students learn about waste production and its solutions. Waste is also classified into biodegradable and non-biodegradable substances.

Tips To Refer To NCERT Solutions

  • Make sure you have read the chapter well first – NCERT solutions provide the answers to questions given at the end of each chapter of the NCERT textbook. These questions are cherry-picked from the chapter. If you do not read the chapter well first, you will be unable to answer any questions related to it. That is why you must go through a chapter at least twice before moving onto the exercises at the end of it.
  • Only trust authentic resources – Often, unreliable online educational resources can give you wrong answers to the questions you ask. In this case, you will be misguided and will end up more confused than ever. Choose only the best educational service in the market and avail its study material.
  • Make sure to make your own notes while referring to NCERT Solutions – You will pick up on several new techniques and methods to solve questions while going through NCERT solutions. If you do not jot them down in your notebook, you will forget these new methods and revert back to your old, more time-consuming ways of solving questions. Always make your own notes while learning something new. This habit will help you a lot in the future too.
