The new year is finally here. 2020 was indeed an absolute riot of a time. We have developed new skills to keep safe from the virus and keep our sanity while at home. But what we also got was loads of extra time where we got to finish a handful of shows we have been avoiding for a few years. The same thing applied to anime lovers. It was a year where every series was indeed finished. But why stop there?
This 2021, as the world slowly heals and gets back into the swing of things, there are also a few more anime series you could binge-watch for hours on end. So if you have access to some of the best and free anime sites out there today, here are some of the most sought-after anime series to stream this 2021.
- Japan Sinks
This series is a ten-episode show on Netflix, based on a disaster novel of the very same name published in 1973. Although it is technically an adventure-themed story, the realness of the show bleeds through just after the first few episodes.
The story is set shortly during the end of the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The whole driving force of the story comes in after Japan, out of nowhere, gets affected by earthquakes and a mega-tsunami. It is now the goal of a family to try and get into safety.
Though it is a bit heart wrenching, the adventure aspect of the show will keep you on your toes and will make you want to know what will happen next.
- Neon Genesis Evangelion
A show that single-handedly changed anime right in the middle of the nineties. This 25 episode series is immensely popular, mostly because of its extreme themes of psychological fiction in contrast with the usual giant robots vs. giant monsters storylines.
The story is set fifteen years in the future after a worldwide cataclysmic event. The main character of the show, Shinji gets recruited by his estranged father Gendo, who runs a shadowy organization called Nerv. Shinji is immediately assigned as a pilot of a giant biomechanical robot called an Evangelion.
Even if the series was released back in 1995, this series remained as popular as ever. More so because the series was rebooted in 2007, and have been releasing an episode every few years. And now, this 2021, it has been announced that the final episode of the reboot series will be released.
- Cells at Work! Code Black
Anime has a specific ability to make everything seem interesting. Even with the most unusual kinds of plots. This show anthropomorphizes white and red blood cells as the main characters that are, just like their real-life counterparts, trying to carry out their innate duties to help in repairing the body that they work in.
The second season of this show was already showing last winter. But, its spin-off is called Cells at Work! Code Black will be showing this January of 2021. The spin-off still retains the same premise of the original show, only this time, the story is set on a dangerously unhealthy body. Because of these new variables, a little bit of horror is introduced on the show.
- SK8 the Infinity
Just like what was mentioned previously, anime can make any theme of the story deeply engaging. But add that up with the excitement that can only be found in extreme sports, and you got yourselves a good memorable show.
SK8 the Infinity is skateboarding-themed anime that not only centers on a group of passionate individuals, but also a very mysterious and cutthroat competition that the heroes are all drawn towards. Downhill skating in the mines.
Just like Initial D, SK8 the Infinity gives the anime treatment to another sport that is reserved for thrill-seekers and speed demons.
For an anime that is a bit more on the wild side, Vladlove will be a perfect pick and something to watch out for.
Vladlove mixes vampires, rock band performances, and the ever-entertaining hyperbolized slapstick humor. With all of these contrasting themes, it is essentially a show that could never work well. However, it does because of the expertise of Mamoru Oshii, the one responsible for the iconic Ghost in the Shell. (both the original 90’s movie and the series after that)
The story revolves around a high schooler, Mitsugu Bamba who then befriends a frail vampire. The vampire even becomes a schoolmate and then, later on, a bandmate.
More shows are coming!
These are only just a few of the best ones you could stream this year. The good thing is that there will be more and more anime series coming in the future. Attack on Titan’s next season will be coming soon. There will never be an end to the amount of anime series to check out in the future.
